2010 Red Rock Reserve Malbec
An Experience in Balance
At Red Rock, we take great care to achieve a delicate harmony between fruit and hints of oak, balancing body with flavor. Our 2010 Red Rock Malbec opens with a floral aroma unique to this varietal that extends to the palate and combines with flavors of dark fruit, dusty cocoa powder, underlying earthy notes and a slight hint of jasmine. This medium-bodied wine is approachable with a clean and fruit-driven finish.
Although it was historically grown as a blending grape in the Bordeaux region of France, it has seen recent popularity as a single-varietal wine out of Argentina. Malbec, a thin-skinned grape, thrives with the abundance of sun and warm, dry weather offered in some growing climates in California. Like France, California has traditionally used Malbec as a blending grape but opportunities to showcase this full-bodied varietal are increasing. Malbec is characterized by its deep purple color, smooth tannins, and ripe fruit flavors.
The grapes for our 2010 Red Rock Malbec were selected from a variety of appellations throughout California, predominantly Lodi, with the balance coming from the North Coast and the Central Coast. By using grapes from a broad range of California appellations, our winemaker has the flexibility to choose high quality fruit from some of the state’s top vineyards each year.
For our 2010 Malbec, we co-fermented the Malbec grapes on Petite Sirahskins to integrate the distinct floral aromas of Malbec with the excellent tannic structure of Petite Sirah. We took great care to drain and press the wine at the optimal time to extract vivid colors and flavors without retaining any astringency. A portion of the blend received oak contact to add complex layers of vanilla and sweet aromatics. We added Petite Sirahto the Malbec early on, allowing the components of the blend to integrate seamlessly over time. As we approached bottling, we added Cabernet Sauvignon to the blend, giving this Malbec excellent structure and depth in the mid-palate.
